Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett announced in a meeting of the State Board of Education rankings of schools as outlined in Public Law 221. Schools were ranked based on student performance and improvement data from ISTEP+ and End of Course Assessments.

Schools are rated from A to F with A being “Exemplary” and F being “Academic Probation.” The percentage of public schools ranking A increased from 38% to 42% since last year. High schools saw the biggest jump in “Exemplary” rankings from 4% to 16%. Elementary schools continue to rank the highest overall. However, the percentage of public high schools that that rated an F fell from 49% to 7%. A majority of high schools ranked a C, or “Academic Progress.”

Only 16 school corporations had every school receive an A rating, the largest being Carmel Clay with 15 schools. 7 schools are now in their 6th year of probation, including 6 schools in the Indianapolis Public School Corporation.

You can find the full information for each school district including some of the raw data, explanations of the Public Law, and the results of probation on the Department of Education Assessment website.

Often when we think about using tutors we think about young children needing help with reading or high school students needing assistance with advanced math classes. A very common type of tutoring is test preparation. Whether you are preparing for ISTEP (Hoosier students), the SATs (high school students applying to college, or the LSAT (college students applying to law school), you can get a leg up in your test prep with a tutor.

By searching Indianapolis Tutoring Online for your specific zip code and the test that you will be taking, you can find local tutors in your area who specialize in those tests. We’ll tell you how much they charge, their credentials, and how far they are willing to travel. Simply enter your information into the search box and begin looking through the results. Once you find a match, email them through the secure system and they will respond with availability.

Below is a video made by a local SAT prep tutor teaching words that might appear on the SAT. You can see how a combination of traditional workbook/computer preparation combined with a tutor can drastically help a student’s understanding of the subject matter.

Although our goal at Indianapolis Tutoring Online is to match students up with local tutors, sometimes you might find it more convenient for the tutoring to occur online. In the video below, a tutor available through WyzAnt (the matching service that we work with), shows you how online math tutoring works using Skype.

When might you use online tutoring rather than in-person? Online tutoring is a great solution when you live in an area where there are not many local tutors or the ones available are already booked. Online tutoring is also a good option when kids are home during the summer and do not have transportation available to take them back and forth to their tutoring sessions.

Watch the video below and see how it would work. Then try our tutor matching service to find tutors for the subject area that you need. Contact them via the secure contact submission form and begin negotiations to determine whether in-person or online tutoring would work best for your student.
